Events of 1990
The official demolition of the Berlin Wall begins in June of 1990. The
wall had been built in 1961 by the Communist-run East Germany to prevent
defectors from traveling over the border to Capitalist-run West
Germany. Control of the Berlin Wall ended in November of 1989 when it
was announced that East German citizens would be allowed to cross the
border with complete freedom. The removal of the wall began in June of
1990 and by October, the reunification of West and East Germany was
completed. Demolition on the wall was finished in 1992.
